Experience Viking heritage on a scale never before seen in Shetland with activities including stepping aboard a longship, experiencing life in a Viking community and feasting with Vikings.
The Follow the Vikings Unst Festival and Viking Activity Day in Lerwick celebrate Scotland and Shetland’s Viking history, heritage and archaeology. Held over two weekends, at two locations, visitors will have the opportunity to meet visiting Vikings - Ardglass from Ireland (who featured in the TV series Vikings) and Walhalla from Poland.
Re-enactors and craftspeople will recreate Viking life based around the replica longhouse and longship at Haroldswick, Unst, there will be demonstrations of combat and fire breathing, and an evening of feasting and entertainment.
The following weekend, Shetland Museum and Archives will go “Viking” for the day with talks, workshops and re-enactments designed to suit all ages. The best of contemporary cuisine with a Nordic twist will be served up in the evening, presided over by Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa Guizer Jarl in his role as King Svein Forkbeard.
