Considered a main date in the sporting calendar, the Melrose Sevens takes place in April this year. Rugby 7s was founded in Melrose in 1883 and the game returns in 2010 for the 127th time. This year sees an extended tournament with guest teams coming from around the world. Melrose itself will take on a carnival atmosphere as it hosts a range of social events for participants and spectators to enjoy.
The event is one of ten Sevens tournaments played as part of The Borders League's King of the Sevens. It will kick off with a VETS tournament on Friday 9th April. Teams from around the Globe will be playing their own unique brand of ten-a-side rugby offering a chance to see some of rugby’s favourite stars. Appearances have included the Fijian maestro Waisale Serevi, as well as Scottish internationals the Hastings brothers, Craig Chalmers, Doddie Weir, Graham Shiel and Rowen Shepherd. On Saturday 10th April the main Sevens tournament will continue to offer fast-paced and exciting rugby action from twenty four teams.
