Following its inception at Turnberry in 1987, the Senior Open Championship, with Presenting Sponsor Mastercard, has rapidly grown to become the most prestigious event on the European Seniors Tour international schedule. It returns to Scotland in 2012 after taking place in Surrey in 2011.
The stature of the Championship is reflected in the fact that since 2003, the Championship has been officially sanctioned by the US Champions Tour and European Seniors Tour as one of the five Major Championships. The Senior Open Championship boasts the biggest overall prize fund in European Seniors Tour golf of over £1 million. It is a 72 hole stroke play event, played over four days with a starting field of 144 Senior professionals.
