The Scottish Challenge on the European Challenge Tour is poised to power to new heights with the news that Scottish Hydro has agreed to become title sponsor for the next three years.
Although still in its infancy, the tournament – which will now be called the Scottish Hydro Challenge – has already become a firm favourite with Challenge Tour players over the past three years. A measure of its stature is the fact that this year’s field will also feature former Open Champion Paul Lawrie.
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at ventScotland, the national events agency, said: “The Scottish Hydro Challenge provides a window of opportunity for aspiring young professionals and it is vital that, in the years leading up to The 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland, we maximise this window and give Scottish talent a chance to make The Ryder Cup Team on home soil. Paul Lawrie’s appearance at the Scottish Hydro Challenge will be a real inspiration to the competitors.”
The tournament will also have a new venue for its fourth staging when the magnificent Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club in Aviemore plays host to the event from July 30 - August 2, 2009. Designed by renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas and set among heather and birch trees and against the majestic backdrop of the Cairngorm mountain range, the 7,153 yard, par 72 course is sure to test all aspects of the game.
