The MOBO Awards, which took place at Glasgow’s SECC in 2009, scooped two major prizes last night (Thursday, 9 September) at the prestigious Scottish Event Awards.
MOBO received the Chairman’s Award and was also the winner of the Best Medium Event Category at the influential awards ceremony, which recognises the achievements of the national events industry.
In 2009, Glasgow made music history as the first city to host the MOBO Awards outside of London in the event’s thirteen year history.
The MOBO Awards were secured for Glasgow by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) and EventScotland and the two organisations worked together to implement and execute an integrated campaign to capitalise on this opportunity.
£1 million in economic benefit was achieved for Glasgow and Scotland through hosting the Awards while media coverage of the event - valued at £4 million - was picked up from as far afield as the US, Canada, Singapore and India.
Speaking at the glittering ceremony at Glasgow’s new Grand Central Hotel, Kanya King, CEO and Founder of the MOBO Awards, said: “To have been nominated for an award was an honour, but to have picked up two awards including the ultimate Chairman Award was truly a surprise.
“The moment we announced Glasgow as the host city the Scottish response was overwhelming. Therefore I am deeply happy and proud of the entire production team and all who contributed to what has been considered our best ever MOBO Awards. We really value the support of partners EventScotland and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau in helping us host such a fantastic event.”
We're also delighted that Piping Live! and Etape Caledonia were successful in winning awards.
