The catering industry already excels at origin, or provenance, labelling in certain areas e.g. wine and whisky. This allows consumers to make informed choices when eating out. Research increasingly suggests that consumers would like similar information for other menu items, but the quality of this can vary widely.
As part of its national food policy, the Scottish Government has launched an online guide to help caterers make accurate and clear origin declarations. Developed in conjunction with industry, trialled and tested by Scottish caterers, the website aims to clarify legal requirements, good practise and provide sample menu listings.
