Joining The Tall Ships Races 2011 Cruise in Company leg between Greenock and Lerwick (12 to 21 July) are six trainees from Argyll and Bute. The youngsters are sailing on board Wylde Swan, Tecla, Europa and Alba Endeavour as they sail up the west coast and onward to Orkney and Shetland.
On joining Wylde Swan, experienced sailor, Rebecca Barnard (19) from Tobermory said: “I have been thinking about taking part in The Tall Ships Races for a few years now, so when I attained my Day Skipper ticket last year I decided to fulfil my ambition to sail on a Tall Ship. I am really looking forward to climbing the rigging and getting involved in all aspects of ship life.
“It will also be good to participate in the events happening in all the guest harbours.”
Rebecca has been sponsored by Argyll and Bute Council. Argyll and Bute Cllr Neil MacKay, spokesperson for Enterprise, Energy, Culture and Tourism said: “We are delighted that young people from Argyll and Bute have the chance to experience sailing in this prestigious event. This event provides a unique learning experience and a hugely beneficial opportunity for the trainees to develop a range of skills, whilst working as part of a team in challenging conditions in some of the best sailing waters in the world.
“I’m sure that, for each of the trainees, this will be a memorable and positive sail-training adventure.”
