The World Pipe Band Championships will feature close to a record number of bands when the event returns to Glasgow next month. 230 bands from 12 countries around the world have entered this year’s competitions which are being held on Saturday 13th August 2011 at Glasgow Green.
Tickets for the Grade 1 arena, where the bands competing to be World Champions will perform are close to selling out again this year. General admission tickets and Guest Hospitality Packages are also still available. People purchasing general admission tickets for the event can also access the Grade 1 arena for free for the morning competition for the first time.
Every year more than 200 bands bring 8,000 pipers and drummers and thousands of spectators to Glasgow Green for the unique sights and sounds of the event which is affectionately known as “The Worlds”. The World Pipe Band Championships have been associated with Glasgow for more than 60 years.
As well as the toughest pipe band competition in the world, visitors to the event can also enjoy the Glasgow World Highland Games, Highland Dancing competitions, an improved children’s zone and four of Scotland’s best known chefs will be appearing at cooking demonstrations at the Flavour of Scotland tent using some of Scotland’s finest and best known ingredients.
Tickets for the Grade 1 Finals, which will see the winners crowned World Champions, are available in advance for £24 with general admission tickets priced at £9 in advance and £11 on the day. The World Pipe Band Championships are being organised by Glasgow Life on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and Glasgow City Council and are supported by EventScotland, Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.
