Olympic Champions Head to Edinburgh For Cross Country

Tomorrow (7 January) marks the start of the 2012 elite sporting calendar in Scotland with the BUPA Great Edinburgh Cross Country. Widely regarded as one of the best cross country meets in the world, it also features the 5k Bupa Great Winter Run, and the junior 2.5k events. In the stunning surroundings of Holyrood Park, it is the perfect start to the New Year for runners and spectators alike.

After the mass participation events, some of the world’s top cross country runners and Olympic champions will compete in the Men’s 8km and Women’s 6km cross country races. Scottish Commonwealth stars Steph Twell and Freya Murray will be looking to get the year off to a winning start in the Scottish capital, while three current Olympic gold medallists; Kenenisa Bekele, Asbel Kiprop and Brimin Kipruto will also be competing in the UK for the first time in the Olympic Year.

Spectators can line the route for free to catch a glimpse of the athletes and to cheer on runners in the other races. For those unable to make it along, the elite races will be shown live on BBC2 Scotland from 1pm.
