Daley leads Brits to action in Edinburgh

Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley will lead the British Gas GBR Diving Team to action at the Edinburgh leg of the FINA/Midea Diving World Series which will take place from 19th – 21st April at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Making his return to international competition following his medal winning performance at the London Olympics, Daley will be competing in the men’s 10m Individual and is likely to face his rival Qui Bo from China.

The eight-strong contingent also includes Olympic finalists Chris Mears (pictured), Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow as the athletes look to make their mark on the international calendar with the first international diving event since the Olympics on home soil.

Mears, Nick Robinson-Baker, Alicia Blagg and Hannah Starling also make up the team which will compete at the first leg of the FINA/Midea World Series which kicks off in Beijing from 15th – 17th March.

The Edinburgh leg is supported by British Swimming, UK Sport, EventScotland and the City of Edinburgh Council and makes up one of the UK Sport Gold Event Series which is backed by the National Lottery to bring World class sport to this country.

On his international return Daley said: “The World Series is a great way to start the season. It allows us to compete against the best ahead of the World Championships and it is a good measure of how you are doing in mid season training.

“At the beginning of the year my coaches and I decided that I wouldn’t compete in all six legs of the World Series. Along with Andy and Alexei, we have chosen the most important competitions for me to focus on. This event is going to be used as part of the qualification for the Worlds so I am looking to put in a good performance in Edinburgh.

“I’m really looking forward to the World Championships this year which is the first major competition for me after the Olympics. It will be a challenge because Bo has always performed well at this level but I am working hard and I will see what I can do.

“I’m really excited to be getting back into the competitive season. I have never competed in Edinburgh before and from what I have seen the pool looks great. It is exciting to think that this pool will be used for the Commonwealth Games. It is always good to have the support from your home crowd and that definitely inspired me in London and I hope it will inspire the whole team in Edinburgh too.”

Mears, who finished ninth at the London Olympics, said: “I’m really proud of my performance at the Olympics. Making the final was beyond my expectations and something I’ll never forget.

“Competing in front of a home crowd was like nothing I had experienced before and I think that the crowd in Edinburgh will create a great atmosphere and spur us all on to do our best. I will be in the Synchro and the Individual and I know the competition will be tough but I have been working on new dives which I can’t wait to showcase in front of the crowd.”
