John Reed, President Melrose RFC I am delighted to announce that Melrose 7s, 2013 is again to be sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and for that I am truly grateful. Since the game of 7s was born at Melrose 130 years ago, the abbreviated form of the game has grown into a worldwide sport with a huge following and the number of participating countries and teams increases year on year.
With the Rugby Sevens World Cup taking place in Russia this year, the IRB series growing each year, the inclusion in the Commonwealth Games and from 2016, the Olympic Games in Brazil, it is fitting that such a prominent and successful company as Aberdeen Asset Management should be sponsors of the tournament where it all started.
As usual we shall be holding a 24 team tournament and I am delighted that the Indian Rugby Union are sending a development squad, to be coached in sevens skills by top class coaches and also participate in the Tournament. This is an ongoing venture that has been arranged with EventScotland, Glasgow, Commonwealth Games 2014 and Melrose RFC with a view to promote sevens rugby prior to the Glasgow event. With holders of the Ladies Centenary Cup, Saracens, Worcester Warriors and the top Scottish club teams taking part it promises to be a strong tournament.
After the weather we have endured for the last year we must surely be due something better from the elements and the annual Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose Sevens on April 13th 2013 will be a fitting occasion to herald the summer.
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting the Melrose Sevens, which is an event that has an ever increasing global appeal. As the birthplace of the seven-a-side game, I am certain the tournament can continue to grow and attract visitors and supporters from far beyond the Scottish Borders, while showcasing Scotland as the perfect stage for major sporting events.”
