The circus comes to Scotstoun for 2014 Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s

After the fun of the 2013 Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s movie fancy dress theme the organisers of the penultimate leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series event have opted for something quite different next year - but something that will still test supporters' creativity.

For the 2014 event it will be a circus theme on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May at Scotstoun Stadium, with fans, young and old alike, encouraged to turn up as their favourite, most extravagant big top characters.

As ever there will be prizes to be won for the best-dressed supporters and a lap of honour around the stadium bowl for all those dressed up.

Scottish Rugby’s Director of Commercial Operations, Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay, said: “With the Commonwealth Games shortly after our HSBC Sevens World Series event and sevens being one of the core sports in the games, the world will be looking to Scotstoun Stadium in May.

“Fancy dress has always gone down well at Scotstoun for the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s and is synonymous to the game of sevens throughout the world, be it in Wellington, Hong Kong, Dubai or here at home.

“After the Glasgow 7s this year we went out to fans and asked them what themes they wanted to have at our next event and we received an overwhelming response and range of ideas.

“We went for the circus theme because it will once again allow us to dress the stadium to suit the flavour of the event and offer lots of circus styled entertainment and prizes off the pitch.

“It’s also a theme we believe can be worked to suit supporters of all ages and from all walks of life, from stag and hen dos to a family day out.”

Scotland 7s head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “There has been a wonderful atmosphere at Scotstoun the last two years for the sevens with so many people dressing up and buying into our different themes for the two tournaments.

“Hopefully, the circus style fancy dress will be another opportunity for fans to get behind the theme and create a fun party atmosphere in the stadium, that continues to make Scotstoun a great venue for international sevens.”

After securing their core status at the London 7s last May, Scotland 7s will compete in the nine HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments once again this year and will be the host nation at the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s.

Their first HSBC Sevens World Series tournament of the year, will be on Australia’s Gold Coast on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October 2013.
