British swimmers will lead a team of European Allstars as they go head-to-head with world number one swimming nation the USA at the Duel in the Pool in December.
The biennial Duel in the Pool is a USA Swimming event designed to showcase the sport’s most exciting swimmers and will be co-hosted this year by British Swimming, Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council and EventScotland.
Duel in the Pool 2013 will be held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, home to next year’s Commonwealth Games swimming, on 20-21 December and provides a unique opportunity for fans to see the world’s greatest swimmers battle for supremacy in the pool.
Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson is one of those who will lead the European challenge and he is looking forward to performing in front of a home crowd.
“I watched Duel in the Pool four years ago when it was in Manchester and it looked like a great event so I’m thrilled to be part of the team this time around,” said Jamieson.
“For me it will be special as it’s being held in my home town of Glasgow and it will be a great opportunity to try the newly refurbished pool ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year.
“There’s no doubt it will be a very tough event as the USA are the strongest nation in world swimming but with an impressive European team and with the backing of a passionate home crowd behind us we hope to push them all the way.”
British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes is delighted to see such a high-profile event being staged once again in Britain.
“We are delighted to welcome some of the world's greatest athletes to Glasgow to again see the best swimmers in Europe compete against the greatest swimming nation in the world, the USA,” said Sparkes.
“We look forward to seeing some great swimming with the potential for world records in what we anticipate will be one of the fastest pools in the world.”
Both teams will include up to 22 men and 22 women each for the short course (25m) meet with each event being a straight, head-to-head final.
Executive Director for USA Swimming Chuck Wielgus commented: “USA Swimming is thrilled to continue the long-standing tradition of the Duel in the Pool.
“We look forward to an extremely competitive meet, especially in the duel format, and we’re excited that the competition is moving to Scotland for the first time in its history.”
Glasgow is excited to be bringing Duel in the Pool to the city as it offers another opportunity to witness world class sport ahead of next summer’s Commonwealth Games.
Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for Commonwealth Games 2014 and Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “We are delighted the fantastic Duel in the Pool is taking place in Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
“In the lead up to Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the City of Glasgow will welcome a number of exciting sporting events, such as this, which will further cement our position as one of the top 10 sporting cities in the World.
“The Duel in the Pool is a brilliant opportunity for the people of Glasgow and Scotland to come along, support the athletes and get a taste of what to expect next year.”
The event is also hosted by EventScotland and Chief Operating Officer Paul Bush OBE is pleased that Tollcross continues to attract high-calibre international events.
“Duel in the Pool is a world-class spectacle of swimming and will bring some of the sport’s top names to Glasgow, including a number of medallists from London 2012,” said Bush.
“As we approach 2014, when Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games, it is hugely exciting to be able to confirm an event of this stature for the newly refurbished Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
“The improvements to the venue have enabled us to attract major swimming events like never before, such as Duel in the Pool and the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships. This gives an early indication of the events legacy that we are starting to deliver from the Games.”
