Stirling announces line up for Hogmanay 2014 Celebrations

Organisers of Stirling’s award-winning Hogmanay celebrations announce the line-up for this year’s event
Stirling’s Hogmanay – 31 December – will be headlined by iconic band the Waterboys.
The line-up also features celtic rockers Skerryvore, singer/songwriter JJ Gilmour and his band, and the Dundee band Model Aeroplanes.
Stirling’s Hogmanay is part of Scotland’s Winter Festivals – a programme of events funded by the Scottish Government and managed by EventScotland.
Scotland boasts a wide variety of Hogmanay celebrations, from large scale events such as Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, which attracts over 80,000 international visitors each year, to smaller, regional gatherings such as Stirling’s Hogmanay.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, said: “Scotland is world-renowned for its spectacular Hogmanay celebrations and the close of what has been an eventful and historic year for us will be no exception.
“Scotland’s winter festivals: St Andrew’s Day, Christmas, Hogmanay and Burns Night – are perfect opportunities to highlight all that is great about Scotland – including our thriving contemporary culture, our rich heritage and our warm and friendly welcome.
“So once again we are proudly encouraging Scots and Scots at heart from around the world to join us to see out this incredible year in style at one of our Hogmanay events – including, of course, at the iconic Stirling Castle.”
Stirling’s Hogmanay was named ‘Best Large Event’ at the 2013 Scottish Event Awards and was a finalist again in 2014. The event has risen in stature over the past few years, establishing itself as one of Scotland’s ‘must visit’ events.
Taking place on Stirling Castle’s Esplanade, revellers get to ring in the New Year in the shadow of the iconic castle with one of the UK’s biggest midnight fireworks displays.
Stirling’s Hogmanay will be the Waterboys only UK live date in 2014 and comes just ahead of their new album ‘Modern Blues’, which is being released in January 2015.
Tickets are on sale now via the website www.stirlinghogmanay.com and at venues across Stirling.
The event will be hosted by Steve McKenna formerly of Real Radio and Heart Radio Scotland.
Mark Pauley of Zisys Events said: “We have put together a very strong line-up this year which should appeal to the whole family.  We’re really looking forward to a fantastic night of live music, dancing, fireworks and celebration.”
Headline band the Waterboys were formed 30 years ago by Mike Scott and became famous for their powerful live performances and majestic albums including A Pagan Place and This Is The Sea, which included their biggest hit The Whole Of The Moon.  After the recruitment of Irish fiddle maestro Steve Wickham, the band created their million-selling Fisherman’s Blues album, on which Scott’s original and unusual song-writing was merged with older music – country, trad, blues and gospel – to electrifying effect.
Also on the bill is internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter JJ Gilmour who will be appearing with his band.  JJ made his recording debut in 1989 with The Silencers, one of Scotland’s top bands who enjoyed huge success throughout Europe.  After his time with The Silencers came to an end, JJ went on to have a successful solo career launched by his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Sunnyside P.A.L.’.
The award-winning Skerryvore return to Stirling’s Hogmanay on the back of the release of their fifth album ‘Chasing the Sun’.
Since then, he has released a further two albums and is working on a fourth.
Stirling’s Provost Mike Robbins said: “2014 has been a fabulous and unforgettable year which has seen Stirling stage some of the country’s largest events and celebrations.  We look forward to once again welcoming revellers from across the country and beyond to celebrate the New Year in our fair city.”
Tickets are on sale now priced at £27.50 for an adult and £10 for children (15 years and under) and are available online or at venues across Stirling.
Stirling’s Hogmanay is also sponsored by restaurant Frankie & Bennies.
