GENERATION – 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland

 

May to November 2014 – venues across Scotland 
GENERATION is a landmark series of exhibitions celebrating some of the very best art to have emerged from Scotland in the last 25 years. GENERATION will feature the work of more than 100 artists, many of which have shown works at galleries or festivals across the world, in over 60 venues the length and breadth of Scotland. This ground breaking initiative will be the first time that such an extensive visual arts project has taken place across an entire nation. It is a key feature of the Glasgow 2014 Culture programme and takes place in advance of Glasgow hosting the prestigious Turner Prize exhibition in 2015.A partnership between the National Galleries of Scotland and Glasgow Life, supported by Creative Scotland, EventScotland and the British Council, GENERATION will be one of the most ambitious celebrations of contemporary art ever held by a single country, recognising the huge international acclaim that artists working in Scotland have achieved over the last generation
All exhibitions within GENERATION are FREE to visit. Featured artists including four former Turner Prize winners (Douglas Gordon, Martin Boyce, Richard Wright and Simon Starling) and seven Turner Prize finalists (David Shrigley, Lucy Skaer, Karla Black, Cathy Wilkes, Nathan Coley, Jim Lambie and Christine Borland).
In Edinburgh, National Galleries of Scotland will host exhibitions  across the Scottish National Gallery, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, which will bring together historically significant works from the past 25 years and show them in parallel with new work by both established and emerging artists, while GENERATION exhibitions will also be shown in all four galleries of the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow.  
GENERATION will see exhibitions taking place right across Scotland, including: 
Zoë Walker & Neil Bromwich : The Pier Arts Centre, Orkney  
Douglas Gordon, Caithness Horizons, Thurso 
Toby Paterson : touring exhibition visiting Kirkcaldy, Inverness, Peebles and Dumfrie
Dalziel + Scullion : An Lanntair, Stornoway and Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh
South By South West (SXSW) partnership – venues in East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway
