Scotland’s top players were celebrating today after achieving something that even Olympic and double World champion Chen Long hasn’t been able to do: qualify for the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena in August as of right.
When the BWF’s qualifying Race to Glasgow came to an end yesterday Scotland players qualified for all five events with a total of nine Scots set to receive invitations.
But Chen Long will have to wait to see if China nominate him instead of one of the three players who qualified above him. For China to have four players in the men’s singles all four had to finish the Race to Glasgow in the top eight. But Chen Long finished ninth after Lin Dan (8th) and Tian Houwei (7th) leapfrogged him by reaching the semi-finals of last week’s China Masters to join Shi Yuqi (5th) as the three who will receive automatic invitations.
China have until May 11 to decide which three players will go to Glasgow so Chen Long faces an anxious wait.
But Scotland can look forward to nine players representing them at the Emirates Arena.
Kieran Merrilees and Matthew Carder both qualified for the 64-strong men’s singles with Kirsty Gilmour in the 48-strong women’s singles.
In the three doubles events, which will all feature 48 pairs, Scotland have four pairs qualified. Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh are qualified in men’s doubles while Rebekka Findlay and Caitlin Pringle and Julie MacPherson and Eleanor O’Donnell qualified in women’s doubles.
Campbell and MacPherson also qualified in mixed doubles.
Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said today: “This is a fabulous result for Scotland. To have players in all five events is something that will surely excite Scotland fans and it gives the players something to look forward to. You can’t imagine the thrill they will get from representing Scotland in their own back yard.”
