Southern Fried Festival will serve up old favourites and new flavours!

With less than two weeks to go to Perth’s tenth Southern Fried Festival from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July, there are still tickets available for the main stage gigs in Perth Concert Hall including Rock ‘n’ Roll Music: The Songs of Chuck Berry on Thursday 27 July, Nick Lowe and Jim Lauderdale on Friday 28 July, Loudon Wainwright III and Beth Nielsen Chapman on Saturday 29 July and North Star: Scotland Sings Canada on Sunday 30 July as well as the many afternoon and alternative venue gigs taking place over the weekend.

The final line up for the free Outdoor Stage on Perth Concert Hall Plaza features some familiar Southern Fried faces and introduces some acts new to Perth. Two outstanding local live acts, folk rockers, True Gents and Southern rockers Red Pine Timber Co. open the bill on Friday 28 July from 5pm. Saturday 29 July kicks off from 1pm with the young musicians from the week-long Southern Fried Rock Shop, followed by a Perth debut for Glasgow rock ‘n’ roll combo The Beat Poets, some 30 years after their formation. Edinburgh alt-country rockers The Sunshine Delay make a welcome Southern Fried return followed by great harmonies and lyrics from The Wynntown Marshals, Fife-based soul band Lights Out by Nine and Perthshire blues 6-piece Wang Dang Delta. Sunday 30 July features High Plains Jamboree - including favourite Southern Fried Texan country duo Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay – as well as DIY Rockshop graduates Longstay, wry acoustic country from GD Sweeney & The Undercover Cowboys, iconic Glasgow garage band The Primevals and retro rock ‘n’ rollers Lord Rochester.

This year’s Southern Fried soul food offering created by Horsecross Arts head chef Martin Buchan in consultation with US food historian Dr Peggy Brunache reflects the musical mix, bringing back some old favourites including two different gumbos, red velvet cake, American Southern mac ‘n’ cheese and introducing some new flavours including Friday Night Fish Fry, slow cooked Texas style BBQ brisket, three different kinds of cornbread and pitchers of fruity boozy Alabama Slammer. There will be vegetarian, vegan and gluten free alternatives with halal chicken available on request.

Southern Fried soul food will be served up as a buffet in Perth Concert Hall throughout the Southern Fried weekend with the outdoor BBQ firing up during Outdoor Stage performance times.

The Southern Fried Festival is funded by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.

Stuart Turner, Head of EventScotland, said: “Scotland is the perfect stage for cultural events, and we are delighted to be supporting the festival during its milestone tenth year. Southern Fried has a hugely engaging programme and the free Outdoor Stage, with its exciting line-up of local and international roots acts, will no doubt attract many visitors over the weekend.”
