National Poster Exhibition, ‘Young & Powerful’, opening on the 22nd October at The Lighthouse in Glasgow will showcase 80 poster designs from young people, aged 8-26, from across Scotland. The exhibition which is open daily for a month and free to attend will form a significant part of this year’s Graphic Design Festival Scotland, Scotland’s largest design event. The Young & Powerful project is supported by the Year of Young People 2018 Event Fund, managed by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.
A jury containing young people, designers, and decision-makers from across Scotland selected the 80 exhibition posters from 1535 posters submitted to the Young & Powerful Project, held in a bid to inspire young people to engage with design.
To engage young people with the project and exhibition, the Young & Powerful team hosted over 40 creative workshops allowing young people across Scotland to engage with design, use creative skills to tackle real-life problems and express their ideas and opinions on topics that are important to them. The workshops and poster topics included equality, activity and health, the environment, education, the power of young people and how to make Scotland a better place.
Alongside receiving a certificate, the young people included in the exhibition also have a chance at winning their individual age category, getting their hands on a £300 cash prize and trophy. The competition results and winners will be announced during the Young & Powerful Exhibition and Award Ceremony on Monday 22nd October in The Lighthouse, Glasgow.
Victoria Donnelly, Studio Manager for Graphic Design Festival Scotland, the organisers behind Young & Powerful, said, “Young & Powerful is designed to encourage and empower young people from across Scotland to be creative and have their voices heard. It’s about encouraging diversity and inclusion in the creative sector from the ground up. We’ve worked with young people right across Scotland, in locations as diverse as Polmont Prison through to refugee groups and disability support centres.
“The creative industries are the fastest growing part of the UK’s economy, yet creative arts subjects are being cut back in many schools across the country – while design is barely represented at all. Young & Powerful is the perfect antidote and has given young people the opportunity to flex their creative muscles and learn new skills, with the exciting prospect of their work forming part of a major exhibition.”
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Young & Powerful as part of the Year of Young People 2018. It is fantastic to see so many talented young designers having the opportunity to express their views on topics which are important to them.”
The Young & Powerful project is organised by Warriors Studio, award winning graphic design agency based in Glasgow and founders of Graphic Design Festival Scotland.
