Glasgow named Best Small City for sporting events

Glasgow has been named Best Small City at the recent SportBusiness Ultimate Sports City Awards.

Taking place alongside SportAccord 2018 in Bangkok, the ceremony saw 14 other awards presented across several categories including best Hosting, Venues, Transport and Infrastructure, Accommodation, Event Strategy and Legacy. London took the top award, being named the Ultimate Sport City.

The SportBusiness Ultimate Sports City Awards are the internationally recognised and longest-established rankings of the world’s top sports hosts. The have been held every two years since 2006, when they were founded by SportBusiness International.

The awards were decided by a combination of in-depth data, provided by the cities themselves, and a round of voting by a panel of esteemed external judges.

Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events, said: “This is a fantastic result for Glasgow and for the whole events industry who work tirelessly day in and day out to build Scotland’s reputation as the perfect stage for sporting events.

“From the Commonwealth Games in 2014, 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and the 2017 TOTAL BWF World Badminton Championships, to this summer’s inaugural Glasgow 2018 European Championships, next year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships and the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships, the city consistently delivers amazing world-class major sporting events and truly deserves the title of Best Small City.”
