American star Kuchar set to tee it up at Gullane

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, a Rolex Series event, will once again play a key role in American star Matt Kuchar’s schedule, with confirmation that he will tee it up at Gullane Golf Club on July 12-15, 2018, and tickets to see him in action are available from just £15.

The four-time Ryder Cup player’s tied fourth finish at the tournament in 2017 led to his best ever showing at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale the following week, where he finished as runner-up to compatriot Jordan Spieth.

Paul Bush, Director of Events, VisitScotland said, “We are delighted that Matt Kuchar will be making a welcome return to play in The Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open this summer. He is a popular player among golf fans around the world and it will be a real treat for the Scottish crowds to see him tee it up at Gullane. He adds his name to an already first class field which only reinforces the appeal that playing in Scotland, the Home of Golf has for even the world’s top players.”

This year the Scottish Open is once again part of the Rolex Series - the premium category of tournaments on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, each with a minimum prize fund of US$7million - and again takes its traditional slot in the week before The Open at Carnoustie Golf Links.

Six out of the last eight winners of The Open have taken part in The Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open before claiming the Claret Jug and Kuchar believes teeing it up in Scotland, the Home of Golf, is the perfect preparation as he chases his first Major Championship title.

The 39 year old, who has recorded 13 professional wins worldwide, said: “I have had a good run at The Scottish Open over the past few years. I think it is a great way to tune up for The Open.  I’m a fan of tennis and I know people always get ready for Wimbledon by playing Queens and similar events on grass.

“The Open is such different golf to what we play in the States, so it’s good for us to go over and get a week on links golf and have some tough competition. The Scottish Open has been at some fantastic golf courses and I’ve really enjoyed my last few years playing the tournament.”

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open is returning to Gullane for the first time since 2015, when Kuchar recorded his best finish to date, this time in another American 1-2 alongside winner Rickie Fowler. He has played the Scottish Open seven times during his career, recording three top tens.

Kuchar said: “I had a go a few years ago and lost to Rickie Fowler. Then I had a nice finish last year as well, so I’ve been on a good couple of runs, and certainly my Open performances have been better for it.

“The fans over in Scotland are fantastic. I’ve always enjoyed my visits there, the golf courses are great, the fans are knowledgeable and they’re excited to see the best in the world play.

“I always look forward to a couple of weeks over there to play some good golf.”

With entertainment, children’s activities and food and drink outlets showcasing local produce, all complementing the world-class golfing action on Scotland’s Golf Coast, The Scottish Open is a perfect day out for all the family.
