Special Olympics Scotland is thrilled that tickets are now on sale for the Opening Ceremony of Special Olympics GB’s 40th Anniversary Games at Forthbank Stadium, the home of Stirling Albion Football Club on Thursday 9th August 2018.

Laura Smith, from Special Olympics Scotland and organiser of the Anniversary Games, said: “It will make such a great difference to the experience of our athletes to fill the stadium and cheer them on during the Opening Ceremony.  We are delighted to bring the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games Opening Ceremony to Forthbank Stadium in Stirling.  People can look forward to a great night of entertainment and Scottish Culture.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Events Directorate, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Anniversary Games and to be welcoming so many athletes and teams, as well as families and spectators, to Scotland to be a part of the event.

“Stirling will provide the perfect stage for Games and for the remarkable celebration as we mark the 40th birthday of Special Olympics GB, and five decades of work across the world of the Special Olympics movement.  Special Olympics is itself a hugely important movement and it will be exciting for us to welcome those involved in it from all corners of the UK, as well as further afield in Europe, to be a part of marking that legacy of achievement.”

Andrew Bain Chief Executive of Active Stirling said: “I am delighted that Active Stirling is to be to be a part of such a special event by hosting the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics GB Games here at Forthbank.

“It will be great to see so many athletes from all over Great Britain and Europe enjoying themselves and participating across the ten disciplines throughout the three days.

“I wish every athlete the very best of luck and I’m sure there will be lots of personal bests and great memories during these Games.”

Thomas Mann, Operations Manager looking after Stirling Sports Village, said: "We are delighted to host the Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics GB Anniversary Games within Stirling Sports Village on Thursday 9th August 2018. We are excited to welcome all the athletes, coaches, family members and spectators to our facilities and hope to showcase Active Stirling as a national leader in sport and physical activity.

“Active Stirling is driven by the belief that everyone in the Stirling Council area is entitled to participate in the sport and physical activity of their choice, irrespective of their age, ability or circumstance and we endorse the 'Play Unified' focus of the games, to promote long lasting relationships between disabled and non-disabled people through joint participation."

Chris Hull of Special Olympics GB said: “We are thrilled that Stirling and its University’s excellent facilities will be hosting our very special Anniversary Games in August 2018. This will not only celebrate our 40th anniversary in Great Britain and 50 years of Special Olympics worldwide but also give over a thousand Special Olympics athletes the chance to compete in a prestigious Games and make new friends and memories.

“We look forward to giving the 1,400 athletes, their families, support staff and fans a warm Stirling welcome when they arrive on campus in August.

“Stirling Albion’s Forthbank Stadium will act as the perfect stage for the Opening Ceremony to get this sporting celebration, and event of great human endeavour and spirit, started.

“I know the Scottish community will come out in force to support these brilliant Special Olympics athletes with learning disabilities at the Opening Ceremony and throughout the three days of sports in Stirling.”
