On Monday, 7 January, EventScotland partnered with the National Television Awards (NTAs) and their host, Dermot O’Leary, to unveil the 2019 shortlist nominees at a live event at V&A Dundee.
It is the first time in the NTAs history the shortlist has been announced at a live event and with over 10 million votes recorded last year alone, the event marked the opening of the final public vote to choose this year’s winners.
As well as launching the shortlist to the UK public, the NTAs also collaborated with the Beano, the world’s longest-running comic published by DC Thomson in Dundee. Beano Studios created a special edition comic strip which featuring the NTA host, Dermot O’Leary and some of this year’s nominees in the style of the Bash Street Kids as the ‘Class of 2019’. The bespoke artwork was exclusively revealed during the shortlist announcement and is now available to view in its entirety exclusively on Beano.com.
Speaking about the NTAs decision to bring the event to Scotland and V&A Dundee, Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “EventScotland is always looking for new events to bring to Scotland to showcase all we have to offer visitors.
“For the last few years we’ve been speaking to Indigo TV, the producers of the National Television Awards, about a number of different projects that we could bring to Scotland. Among them was the idea for a live event to announce the nominees for the Awards. The NTAs were keen for the event to take place outside of London at a new and iconic location so V&A Dundee were an ideal fit given it is an true architectural masterpiece and the only V&A museum in the world outside of London.
“The opening of V&A Dundee has been an exciting new chapter for both the city and Scotland, and today’s event reinforces not only the museum’s place as a hub of design and creativity but as key part of the country’s events sector.”
The newly opened V&A Dundee is the only other V&A museum anywhere in the world outside of London, propelling Dundee into the global spotlight as one of the most exciting contemporary cities in the UK. Last year, Dundee was named as a must visit destination by Lonely Planet, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and was named on National Geographic UK’s Cool List 2019, making it an ideal backdrop for the National Television Awards launch. As a British design icon which was created in Dundee, Beano also features in V&A Dundee’s Scottish Design Galleries.
The winners of the 14 publicly voted categories will be announced when the show broadcasts live on ITV, from 7.30pm on Tuesday 22 January and as part of the partnership, all those that vote have the chance to win a trip to Scotland. To vote, visit www.nationaltvawards.com.
