Unique Events today announced the return of the Burns&Beyond with Johnnie Walker Festival in January 2020, along with the first shows to be announced at the all new ‘Burns&Beyond Festival Club’ located in Edinburgh’s famous Assembly Rooms, George Street from Thursday 23 – Sunday 26 January.
With festival support from City of Edinburgh Council, Scotland’s Winter Festivals and Essential Edinburgh, Burns&Beyond celebrates the life and legacy of Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard, inviting audiences to discover the very best in creative talents from across Scotland and beyond in some of Edinburgh’s most well-known buildings and a few of its more secretive spaces.
Opening the Burns&Beyond Festival Club on Thursday 23 January is Scottish music legend and inspirational artist Edwyn Collins.
Recently celebrating his 60th birthday, the musician, producer and record label owner from Edinburgh has been a pioneer of Scotland’s music scene for over 40 years. Lead singer and co-founder of the 1980s post-punk band Orange Juice, Collins started a solo career following the group's split in 1985, and his 1995 single ‘A Girl Like You’ was a world-wide hit. In February 2005, Collins was hospitalised following two cerebral haemorrhages which resulted in aphasia, and he subsequently underwent an extensive rehabilitation period. He resumed his musical career in 2007 and a documentary film on his recovery, titled The Possibilities Are Endless, was released in 2014. Collins was the co-founder of the indie record label Postcard Records and winner of the Ivor Novello Award, the Ivor Inspiration Award, in 2009. His latest album Badbea was released in 2019 to rave reviews and critical acclaim.
Tide Lines, appearing on Friday 24 January, are a four-piece band based in Glasgow who are heavily influenced by the traditional music of their native Highlands and Islands, but whose highly eclectic sound is driven by acoustic and electric guitars, with drums and keyboards. Having recently sold-out Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom in only 6 minutes, their devoted fans are renowned for creating electric atmospheres and fuelling raucous live shows.
On appearing at Burns&Beyond, Tide Lines said: ‘We’re really looking forward to performing as part of the Burns&Beyond Festival Club. We always enjoy playing for an Edinburgh audience and, with this show being part of a great festival in an amazing venue, it’s likely to be a cracker!’
The inaugural Burns&Beyond Festival in January 2019 welcomed over 30,000 visitors to venues throughout the historic city centre, offering something for everybody with a packed programme of free and ticketed events including live music, art installations, family ceilidhs, theatre, comedy, free family activities and a not-so-traditional Burns Supper. The 2020 Programme, announced in November, promises exciting and vibrant events for all ages reaching out across the New and Old Towns.
Alan Thomson, Director of Unique Events, said: “The response to the inaugural Burns&Beyond festival was overwhelming and we have big plans for the 2020 programme. Our new Festival Club at the Assembly Rooms promises a feast of live music, performance and whisky, and we are thrilled that Edwyn Collins and Tide Lines will be a key part of the celebrations. They are sure to be the hot tickets for the Festival.”
Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Burns&Beyond in its second year through Scotland’s Winter Festivals programme. Every year, Scots and Scots-at-heart come together to celebrate the life, work and legacy of our national poet, Robert Burns. The exciting and diverse programme of activity planned for Burns&Beyond in 2020 further reinforces Scotland as the perfect stage for events and provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything great about our country during the winter months, reaching both local and international audiences alike.”
Tickets for Edwyn Collins & Tide Lines at Burns&Beyond with Johnnie Walker go on-sale on Friday 6 September at 10.00am from www.burnsandbeyond.com.
