Shortlist announced for Robert Burns Humanitarian Award 2012

    BurnsFest

A British midwife who saved the lives of thousands of babies and their mothers in the Congo, a group who have worked to transform the lives of deaf people across the world, and a Scots nurse who worked through gunfire and shells to treat patients from both sides of the Libyan civil war have been announced today (20 December) as finalists for a prestigious humanitarian award, named after Scots Bard, Robert Burns.

Sam Perkins, a midwife working with MSF – Doctors without Borders; the Deaf History Review Editorial Team; and nurse Karen Graham, who is currently working in Tripoli, were shortlisted for the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award (RBHA) from some 26 nominations put forward by individuals and organisations from around the world.

The Robert Burns Humanitarian Award – launched in 2002 and supported by South Ayrshire Council, EventScotland and VisitScotland – recognises a  group or individual who has saved, improved or enriched the lives of others or society as a whole, through personal self-sacrifice, selfless service or 'hands on' charitable work.

Winners receive the equivalent of 1759 guineas – a sum which signifies the year of the Bard’s birth and the coinage then in circulation – as well as a specially commissioned award handcrafted in Scotland.

The Robert Burns Humanitarian Award will be presented at the awards ceremony in the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum on Saturday 28 January.

Scotland’s Biggest Urban Snowsports Festival Celebrates World Class Athletes

Scotland’s biggest urban snowsports festival celebrated the UK’s best ski and snowboard athletes, at the weekend, when the Scottish Snowsports Festival turned Edinburgh’s City Centre into a world-class ski resort.

Competitors came from across the UK to vie for top spot in the freestyle Scottish International Rail Jam and the Cross –Country super sprint on Saturday 17th December 2011.

Three competitors were crowned overall winners of the freestyle event after a series of impressive jumps, twists, jumps on the rails and boxes set up on the 7 metre high, 40 metre long and 15 metre wide slope. Sissy Herant (16 from Stoke on Trent) was the overall female winner, Tyler Harding (15 from Manchester) was the overall male ski winner and Connor Carey (19 from Glasgow) was the overall male snowboard winner.

The slope was the central part of the urban snow park, which was erected in the shadow of the iconic Edinburgh Castle. The purpose built hill was covered in more than 50 tons of real snow, thanks to support from SNO!zone Scotland and  Ski-Scotland.

Snowsport Scotland also transformed Princes Street into the track for the exciting Cross Country Roller ski sprint.

There was also an easy –ski slope which hosted free ski lessons throughout the day for members of the public to enjoy and try out their own skills. In addition, there was free Cross Country Ski taster sessions, DJ’s and a host of winter sports exhibitor’s on site that all brought an electric atmosphere to the city’s main street.

Scottish Snowsports Festival event partners are Snowsport Scotland, SnoZone! Scotland, Ski-Scotland and EventScotland.
