Gleneagles proves to be the perfect stage

    European Ryder Cup Announcement

Johnnie Walker Championship finishes in dramatic fashion ahead of Ryder Cup announcement

Over 10,000 spectators lined the fairways of the PGA Centenary at Gleneagles yesterday to witness one of the most dramatic and impressive finishes the tournament has ever seen.

The fearless Italian, Edoardo Molinari, clinched the title by one shot and birdying the last three holes to do so. This victory left no doubt in the mind of European Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie about his decision to make him one of his wildcard picks for Celtic Manor in October.

Montgomerie explained at the press conference, “In my time on the European Tour, over 24 years, I have never seen a finish like that. All credit to him, having to win and doing just that. What Edoardo Molinari did this week was incredible; he is the kind of player we need to regain The Ryder Cup."

Molinari follows Tom Watson as the only other player in European Tour history to record their first two wins on Scottish soil after winning the Barclays Scottish Open in July this year. Only one point off automatic qualification, his victory at the 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup with his brother Francesco will bring some valuable experience to the team that comprises six rookies.

Looking ahead to 2014, Gleneagles will play host to the next European staging of the Ryder Cup when it returns to the ‘Home of Golf’. Players and officials regularly complimented the wonderful condition of the course during the championship week. The hard working team at Gleneagles will continue to maintain this high standard ahead of the Ryder Cup when the course will witness yet more thrilling action from the best in the world.
