Investing in Adventure Sports

“Scotland provides the perfect stage for adventure; it is rugged, steeped in lore and mystery and with unpredictable weather that brings out the best in both the landscape and the adventurers engaged within it.

“I have been organising adventure events in Scotland for 10 years and each time Rat Race Events stages a new Scottish race or challenge, a pang of excitement hits our planning team. The excitement is infectious as we are also always inundated with requests for more info from our consumers on these new events. The canvas upon which adventure is drawn in Scotland is epic; it truly is a world-class destination for outdoor sports.” Jim Mee, Managing Director, Rat Race Events

With breathtaking mountains, remote glens, rugged peninsulas and deep lochs, Scotland’s terrain is ideally suited to the demanding and multi-discipline sport of Adventure Racing. Few sports showcase Scotland’s sensational scenery, diverse landscape and outdoor culture better and EventScotland has invested strategically over the years to ensure the profile of Adventure Racing in Scotland is capitalised upon.

EventScotland has invested in the Edinburgh Rat Race, the original urban adventure race, since its inception in 2004. EventScotland also supported the ARC Wilderness Challenge in 2005 and 2006 and, in 2007, invested £30,000 in the World Adventure Racing Championships.

Funding was given to the 2010 Deerstalker in the grounds of Traquair House and EventScotland also supported the first year of Scotland’s Coast to Coast which was a sell-out event and looks set to grow in the years ahead.

EventScotland has also supported a range of other events which appeal to the adventure sports audience including the Corona Extra Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Cup for Tiree in 2007 and the O’Neill Highland Surf Championships in Thurso.

2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the Tiree Wave Classic and EventScotland continues to create and identify opportunities within adventure sports for Scotland.
