“Looking towards the Commonwealth games in 2014, Scottish Rugby is continuing to work closely with partners to develop the Edinburgh leg of the IRB World 7s series.

“We have been delighted with the success of the event in recent years and the 2011 event at Murrayfield promises to be another wonderful weekend of rugby 7s.

“Sevens rugby forms an important part of Scotland’s world class rugby portfolio and it will be one of the highlights of the 2014 Commonwealth games.” Dominic McKay, director of communications and public affairs, Scottish Rugby.

Scotland has an enviable portfolio of rugby events and EventScotland works closely with Scottish Rugby and other strategic partners to ensure our rugby events are world class.

EventScotland supported the 2009 Heineken Cup Final, and the 2009 and 2010 Murrayfield Magic RFL Weekend. Funding was also given to the Melrose Sevens Rugby Festival in 2008 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the sport and again in 2009.

In 2011, Edinburgh hosted the Touch World Cup; the first time it has been held in Europe. Touch rugby is one of the fastest growing participation sports in the UK and Europe. It is played in leagues and competitions across Scotland and this event attracts some of the world’s best players.

The IRB sevens series will be played at a new home in 2012; Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium as plans to build a fanbase for the sport before the 2014 Commonwealth Games take shape.

The Melrose Sevens 2012 will again kick off with an expanded VETS tournament on Friday 13th April. Teams from around the Globe will be playing their own unique brand of ten-a-side rugby offering a chance to see some of yesterday’s stars. The main Sevens tournament will take place the following day and will continue to offer fast-paced and exciting rugby action from twenty four teams, of which the following countries are travelling to compete - South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong and India.
