The Solheim Cup is the biggest event in women’s golf and one of the most prestigious women’s sporting events on the planet.
It was first contested in 1990 at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Florida. Since then it has been held biennially with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. This year it will be held at The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire from the 9th to the 15th September. Gleneagles is an iconic, credible and world-class venue with proven experience of hosting and enhancing major events.
The event consists of a golf match play competition between teams of 12 players from Europe and the United States, mirroring the concept seen in The Ryder Cup. When held in Europe, the rights to the event are owned by the Ladies European Tour, who delegate the responsibility for staging the event to a host country or venue. In August 2015, Scotland submitted a bid to the Ladies European Tour to stage The 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles. The bid was backed and underwritten by The Scottish Government and submitted by the EventScotland team within VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.
The 2019 Solheim Cup will not only showcase the stunning assets of Scotland, the Home of Golf, but will underline that Scotland is the perfect stage for major golf events. The event is heavily family focused and seeks to help inspire a new generation of children to take up the game invented in their home country. With more than 100,000 people expected to attend the event, and an additional TV broadcast reach of more than 600 million households, it is set to be the biggest European edition yet!
